neighbors

What prompts a middle-aged couple living in an established neighborhood with parks and trees and manicured lawns with more than its share of well-healed professionals for neighbors, to build and move to an industrial area of town not even initially zoned residential?

1) Solitude—it's almost like living in the country. There are no liquor stores, or nightspots, or any of the other attractions that pull in elements that make a neighborhood unsavory. There are fox and red-tailed hawks and even an abundance of delicious wild blackberries.

2) Fabulous neighbors—entrepreneurial/maverick types that make life interesting. They too are here for the unique live/work life-style, and bring a healthy attitude about life with them.

3) Convenience—for those of us with small businesses that lean more toward the career side than the job side, it is a perfect place to meld one's personal life and one's vocation. We both walk to work. We are 5 minutes from the AAC and downtown. Both airports are between 10 and 20 minutes away.

4) Ownership—a sense of empowerment in a growing, changing, and vibrant area. Plans for parks and hike and bike trails are getting closer to reality. There is almost a pioneer mentality in believing we have the ability to influence the direction of our environment here. We have an open palette. With energy and vision, we can guide this area, originally earmarked for one use, to go through a positive and beneficial re-birth. It's up to us.
